I had this dream that I’d met up with two old friends maybe from my late teens, early twenties, called Dave and Andy and they’re not real. They’re not real friends. They’re sort of...they were both Welsh. Basically, they’re not real people. And so we met up in this cave and we’re all lying on the floor of this cave and talking about old times and we got to talking about cutting hair somehow. And I went downstairs to my reflection in the mirror and my, I’d shaved off my, well my beard was gone. I still had, like, a hairy neck but I’d shaved off my beard in the night or it had vanished. And I said to my Dad, “Dad, did you shave off my beard in the night?” and he said, “no, of course not”, and I said to my sister, “did you?” She said, “of course not”. And then I asked my mum and she said she’d seen me shaving it off in my sleep in the night and that she’d questioned me about it and I’d said that Dave and Andy had paid for me to have one of those, like, wet shaves at the barber. Yeah, so I went to sleep with a beard and I woke up without one. Then, I woke up again, still with my beard, at home in bed.

I’ve had this recurring dream for a while where, I’ve either been renting or owned a house that’s on several storeys and the, the basement’s been made into a basement flat and I’ve been living down there and er, I’ve left it in a state of untidiness and disrepair. And usually it’s, it’s actually, in my dream it’s often very similar to the downstairs of my grandmother’s house. I’ve just left loads of washing up and lots of dirty things lying around. And I've moved into the flat above it and I never go down into it to clear up because the dirtiness is...it’s too intimidating and it’s horrible. I don’t feel that I’ll ever be able to go down there and clear it up because it’s just too manky. So effectively I've lost the basement flat. Which, well, obviously makes me feel very foolish to lose a flat just for the sake of some dirty washing up.

about

Silent Reflux is Chlöe Herington’s first solo release. Initially conceived as an idea in 2006, the album explores, and acts as a soundtrack to, a series of recurring dreams. The physical release comes with a series of ‘listening instructions’, devised to enhance the personal experience through the use of smell. On this recording, she is joined by musicians such as Kavus Torabi (Gong, Knifeworld), Alex Ward (TINTH), Ivan Hussey (‘Celloman), Sarah Anderson (Chrome Hoof), Emmett Elvin (Guapo, Chrome Hoof) and Ben Woollacott (Knifeworld, Medieval Baebes) and Olly Sellwood (A Sweet Niche). Lockdown provided the time and space to complete the album. The physical release comes with a hand-stamped card giving instructions for collecting ‘smells’ to accompany the four main figures. There are plans for a post-COVID live multi-sensory launch in London.

This album concept came from thinking about a series of recurring dreams I had as a child. I distilled these into 'types' and created very simple graphic logos for them which were then developed into full scores from a collection of dreams. Via an online research project, I gathered other peoples dreams that fitted into the types which they submitted as audio or text - I am working with collective v personal multi-sensory experience and resulting memory exploration as a continuation in my practice, and also how smell and memory work together. I am interested in allowing the listener to have a singular and individual experience at home, the same way an audience member only experiences a gig once. It's then committed to memory, aided in this case by the olfactory element.
